Reporting on 4chan

4chan has historically been a nightmare for academics and journalists to research and report on.

Why? Mostly because the damn thing deletes itself every couple of hours, leaving few to no primary sources. Also try interviewing a /b/tard some time—providing you’ve successfully navigated the minefield of porn and gore threads.

That said, Fernando from The Daily Dot did a great job with his piece on 4chan’s 10th anniversary. By the time we spoke, he’d already read essentially every article written about 4chan and watched all of my talks available on YouTube, and I supremely respect anyone who can listen to me drone on for hours on end.

Give it a read if you haven’t already. Or just watch this instead.

This is a long read, but being one of the early adopters of 4chan I couldn’t stop reading it. I never knew how committed...
